Dietrich Varez remains one of the best-known artists on the Big Island. Famous for his uniquely stylized block prints and vibrantly colored paintings, he both traces the adventures and passions of a cast of mythical characters he has carefully researched in legend, and faithfully depicts Hawaiians practicing the arts, skills, and values of Hawai‘i.
Kanehunamoku is believed to be one of twelve "disappearing islands" controlled by the god Kane. Stories tell of fishermen finding an island hidden in the clouds with an abundance of breadfruit ('ulu).
